Insanity in Vang Vieng

Probably one of the laziest and messed up places in the world. During the day, there's nothing to do expect all the restaurants are either playing Friends or Family Guy on there TV.
Still pretty wasted whilst writing this, just came back from tubing in Vang Vieng.
Bizzare town, ex-CIA hub and now it's a heavy tourist attraction. During the day, there's nothing to do because everyone is hung over or still sleeping. But after 11, the tourist hot spot is tubing down the river for 4 KM. Around $7 to rent a tube and right as we get to the river there are a couple bars waiting. The drinks are ridiculously cheap and there is a seperate menu for drugs. Really messed up to cater some crazy people.

In total there are about 10 bars along the river, and I am able to decide which bar I want to go while I float down the river.
Lots of drinks, Brits, and beer pong. and everything.

Can't be bothered to write anymore.

I saw people pass out, people slipping and breaking there tooth on the rock. Insanity.

Gandhiji

Some days during my travel I am not in the mood to do anything. In that case, I look for the most relaxing cafe and read. More often than not during this trip I've taken 3+ hours sitting on the same seat. Great luxury and sometimes magnificent scenery.

Just finished my book!
I highly recommend "The Life of Mahatma Gandhi" by Louis Fischer.A compelling biography of a remarkable man. Fischer compiles everything that is needed to know to understand India's struggle and the life of Gandhi into an engaging biography. Highly recommend it.

Some picture below of my time spent on the slow boat. Also visited the "White Temple" in northern Thailand. According to Wikipedia: "The white color stands for Lord Buddha’s purity; the white glass stands for Lord Buddha’s wisdom that "shines brightly all over the Earth and the Universe."
But it was nothing like I've seen before, a really demonic feel to the whole temple. Before the bridge that led to the temple there were heads of men and women, statues of suffering.
However, the weirdest collection of "symbolism" was inside. It was a modern art painting of the world in ruins, with notable landmarks around the world getting devoured by demons and monsters. Also on the same wall there were a bunch of modern superheroes such as Neo, Goku, Bumblebee, Spiderman, etc...

Welcome to Laos

Slow Boat

This is Laos. The clouds are very visible and low in the morning.

Arrived in Vang Vieng today, so tomorrow I'm going tubing. Will be one unreal afternoon.

Jurassic Park

Arrived in Luang Prabang, Laos, after 3 days of travelling.

Go to LAOS. One of the most beautiful places in South East Asia. The computer and internet here is super slow so I will not be able to post any pictures now. But I felt like that one scene from Jurassic Park, when the humans are on the boat passing by the family of Brachiosaurus. Magnificent.

Then again, in the morning the mountains were shrouded by a heavy fog. What a place.

A lot of Brits and French people here as well. Travelling with a couple of British Uni kids and just downed (10 minutes ago) a shot of snake whiskey. So smooth.

EDIT at 4 20 am. Very fucking strange. The manager at my hostel woke me up from my sleep at 2 am to come drink beer with me, and a canadian guy joined. The manager was very sincere until me and the canadian guy decided it was time to sleep, and the laos dude became very agitated with the both of us. A little crazy, but he said it was due to his argument with his boss.
So we talked our way out of drinking more and are off to bed now.
And there are barely any street lights in Laos. Very dark at night.

Last Days in Chiang Mai

It's been a long stay in Chiang Mai, and leaving tomorrow (8th) to Luang Prabang, Laos.

A great vegetarian restaurant in Chiang Mai. For DR

More bugs

Doi Suthep - Temple on top of the Mountain

Chiang Mai from the top of the hill

Trekking an hour outside of Chiang Mai. Great fun, but really out of shape (or never in) for hiking a couple of hours uphill. Worth it though. Best part was staying in a bamboo hut on top of the mountain, and waking up the next day to some fresh air and incredible view. Didn't matter if the bed was rock hard, slept like a baby.

No electricity for us and only candles. So the night was spent around the fire pit with talking, drinking and playing guitar.

Experienced the elephant riding, but a lot of criticism on that. Mostly because the elephants are working non-stop for a couple of hours as the tourists keep loading onto them. I almost thought my elephant was going to pass out in the heat. Also went White-water rafting and bamboo rafting!

A week left on my trip, but thinking about a possible extension in Laos.

Your Next Top Chef

Friends, you're in luck, I can cook Thai food.

Spent the day cooking on Friday, and it was one of the best experiences.

Arrived at the organic farm 40 minutes away from town. The place was all outdoor (kitchen, dining table, hammock).

Lemongrass Juice
We went to the garden and hand picked our own spices and vegetables. Including, chilies and lemongrass, green onion, and more.

A traditional Thai snack for guests

Tom Yam Ingredients

Pad Thai Ingredients

Fresh Spring Rolls

Som Tam, Papaya Salad

Pad Thai

Red Curry

Sticky Rice and Mango

Longan and Sticky Rice
This was supposed to be a lunch course, but I ate 6 courses, and over 12 dishes. Food coma the whole day and the next day as well, and did not eat for the next 2 meals. Incredibly Satisfied :)

The hardest of the dishes were fresh spring roll and Pad Thai. Rolling the spring roll is quite a challenge because it needs to be very tight without much air. Pad Thai was all about timing, and because you only used one pan to cook everything at different times, it was hard not to overcook some things.

Getting hungry by looking at the pictures.
